What do I need to prepare for a video interview on Hinterview as a candidate?

Hinterview is a video interviewing tool designed to speed up and improve the recruitment process. It gives you the opportunity to add more information to your application before you're invited for interview. Companies feel more confident that you will be a good fit for the role than if they had only seen a written CV and increases your chances of finding the perfect role.

Quick steps:

  1. Your recruitment agent will arrange a Hinterview with you at a time to suit you and if agreed with the client, shall send you through a list of questions to give you time to prepare

  2. They will send you a link to access the Hinterview, with instructions to click on this at the agreed time.

  3. When you join the Hinterview, you'll be on a live video chat with your recruiter. The recruitment agent will then let you know when they start and stop recording.

  4. The rest of the process is like the normal recruitment process; your recruiter will submit your Hinterview and CV to the client and update you directly with feedback

Technical Details - Before you start

  • If you're using an iOS device please make sure it's fully up to date, running IOS 13 or newer.

  • If you're on a PC, Mac or Android device, please use Google Chrome or Firefox web browser.

  • Make sure your microphone, headset and camera are plugged in and you’ve granted them permission. Please ensure you have done this beforehand, otherwise you may need to start the session again.

  • Hinterview relies on a good internet connection. If you’re on a desktop, close any applications which may use your internet. If you're having trouble with wifi, try using 4G on your phone.

Presentation Tips

  • Disturbances - Don’t forget to let family or friends know that you’ll be having a video interview, so there are no distractions or interruptions on your video

  • Noise - Try not to do your Hinterview from a noisy place such as a coffee shop. However, if that is unavoidable, do let your Hinterviewer know there may be some background noise

  • Position - Sit central to the camera and, similarly to a face-to-face interview, take into consideration body language and hand gestures

  • Background - Ensure the background presents you in the most professional way. A white wall is always a safe bet, however If you have a ‘warm coloured feature’ (wooden bookshelf) in the background, it will improve engagement

  • Lighting - Have a strong light source pointed at your face if available. If not, taking advantage of natural light is always a safe bet. Don’t sit in front of a window or somewhere with a back light

  • Dress code - Your video will be sent directly to the hiring manager. Hinterview is a replacement for the initial first stage interview, so dress like you would when meeting a potential employer

  • Eye contact - Try to look directly at the camera throughout the interview, this shows engagement and commitment. Try to not be distracted by external factors during the interview

Good luck!
